Nissan revealed its first all-electric car since the game-changing leaf back in 2010. unsurprisingly missions next effort at full battery electric vehicle is a crossover, Nissan Ariya 2021.
It’s called the rearm this is what it looks like and this is gonna be missing the next big leap forward. which I think couldn’t come at a better time. and it looks like this is gonna be the car to do that. futuristic and modern looking outside a completely new interior. angle finessing. and some pretty good specs underneath as well including battery sizing up to 90-kilowatt hours and over 600 kilometers of range.
In today’s article, we’re going to get into all of that details of the battery range, and charging, the powertrain, the interior design, and exterior design, and where the Nissan Ariya is going to fit in when it comes out.
So what is the newness of the Nissan Ariya? where this new electric SUV comes from?
Overview
Well, the Ariya was presented as a concept at last year’s Tokyo Auto Show. meaning that this car has completed its turn around into a production-ready vehicle in a really short space of time. having been there when the Ariya concept dropped. I reckon the production vehicle does the concept justice with heaps of interesting shapes and lines. but we’ll talk about the design a little bit later. first, let’s converse about what’s under the skin.
The Ariya sits on Marinus ins a new bespoke EV platform. which is all new. but as you’d probably guess many of the lessons that inform what this electric vehicle is going to be like. we’ll learn from the Nissan Leaf. which is now been around for ten years. the humble Leaf has been an automotive game-changer. and it’s still the best-selling electric vehicle ever made.
That said, Tesla’s creations have overwhelmed the Leaf’s status in recent years. but Nissan has decided not to take that lying down. the Ariya will take Nissen EV aspirations to the next level. with a range of specs that aim to match or beat the best from other brands. but still at a reasonable price point.
Trims and Specs
Under the skin there’ll be an initial it’s between having your Ariya fitted with front-wheel drive or a new e-4orce 4 wheel drive system. Nissan will offer two battery sizes across both the tool drive and all-wheel-drive models. so let’s run through the four configurations now. because they do differ in various ways.
2021 Nissan Ariya S Specs
- Battery – 65 kWh (97% usable)
- Motor – 215 HP / 300 Nm of torque
- Transmission – Automatic
- Drivetrain – Front-wheel drive
- 0-62 mph time – 7.5 seconds
- Range – 450 km
2021 Nissan Ariya SV Specs
- Battery – 90 kWh (87% usable)
- Motor – 215 HP / 300 Nm of torque
- Transmission – Automatic
- Drivetrain – Front-wheel drive
- 0-62 mph time – 7.6 seconds
- Range – 610 km
2021 Nissan Ariya SL Specs (65 kWh model)
- Battery – 65 kWh (87% usable)
- Motor – 215 HP / 560 Nm of torque
- Transmission – Automatic
- Drivetrain – Front-wheel drive
- 0-62 mph time – 5.4 seconds
- Range – 430 km
2021 Nissan Ariya SL Specs (90 kWh model)
- Battery – 90 kWh (87% usable)
- Motor – 215 HP / 600 Nm of torque
- Transmission – Automatic
- Drivetrain – Front-wheel drive
- 0-62 mph time – 5.1 seconds
- Range – 580 km
Weight will range between 1,900 kilograms and 2,200 kilograms for the Ariya. so this is not a light vehicle. but EV mass is finally starting to fall slowly.
At present, it looks like the Ariya will continue to use the Japanese standard chatter mode type charging plug. that Australia is sort of moving away from in favor of the type 2 standard. Peak charging speeds for the liquid-cooled batteries will be 130 kilowatts. which allows the Ariya to be charged from empty to 375 kilometers of range in 30 minutes.
e-4orce Technology
Let’s take a moment to talk about the new e-4orce all drive system used in the Ariya. in addition to fine motor control to distribute talk to all four wheels. this system adds a regen braking system to the rear Moda to help reduce pitch and you are when cornering quickly. most EVs have this just on the front axle. sounds pretty sporty.
Design
Turning to the 2021 new Nissan Ariya’s design. now and it’s pretty clear this is quite a stunning vehicle. whether you’re stunned positively or negatively is subjective. but my personal opinion is that this is an interesting attractive vehicle and a huge departure from the Nissan Leaf.
A rather subdued appliance like styling. Ariya sports a prominent cab-forward design with a short bonnet. and at the front end, you’ll note the long and thin headlights and the rather sculptural black single-frame grille. which updates the Nissan’s shield for a new decade. I also quite liked the lines flowing around the front apron and even the air intakes carved out underneath the lights looked good to me. certainly, Nissan Ariya is a statement.
Exterior
Moving around to the side highlights. just how far forward innocent have pushed the cabin to the front wheels. liberating more space inside. the charging door is visible at the front left of the Ariya ahead of the doors which are almost flames surfaced with no crease lines to split up the profile. this work is done by the low set black cladding. which reminds us the Ariya is an SUV. the Glass House tapers attractively upward toward the rear end and it doesn’t look like this will impact the view out for backseat passengers but as for the driver’s view, we’ll have to see.
Big wheels will be a necessity for this design to look good I think these are the optional 20-inch wheels but the standard fit at least overseas would be smaller 19’s with a taller sidewall. but it’s at the rear end where there is a huge departure from contemporary nice and designs with a broad squared off light bar wrapping around the tail. the smoothness of the front and side are more interrupted here with deep creases. and check out that written innocent typeface in a bit of a nod to this brand’s heritage commercial vehicles. I like it. whether you like this rose gold color outside is another question though.
Interior
Now let’s move inside where we’re in for a real shock. not only Dennison remembers how to build a truly appealing cabin. but they’ve done so in a way that is true to the quirky Japanese futurism. that I remember from growing up in the 90s. see how this cabin is open. that’s down to two things. the first is the skateboard battery which allows a flat floor. and the second is the fact that the engineers have packed the climate control system into space under the front bonnet. no tunnels through the cabin. nicely done. the design here is a departure from current Nissen designs and the brand says they targeted the feel of a sleek cafe on a starship.
Usually, this would be nonsense. but I see what they’re talking about. it’s very minimal very open and very cool. it’s also supposed to evoke the Japanese concept of Mah. meaning Spatio-temporal openings. behind a rather avant-garde two-spoke steering wheel the broad dashboard now houses the monolith. which is this wave-like structure holding twin 12.3-inch displays. which runs a new operating system designed for easy swiping between EV’s specific info navigation and media features. a full-length vent is bisected by a roast collared lion which looks cool I reckon.
This car sports black upholstery inside but I’m sure they’ll be brighter options available. one weird thing though check that corporate nests and door release. couldn’t they have done a bespoke item either way this cabin is a big break away from mediocrity for Nissen. and I look forward to sampling it. so well the Nissen area comes to Australia the answer to that question is probably yes .listen Australia is keen for that to happen. but not for a little while. with a speculative arrival pegged for 2022.
Pricing
An as for pricing, Nissen is targeting that Tesla Model 3, not the model y which would mean a tag somewhere in the $70,000 range. that seems pretty good for all this. so those are some detailed observations on the new 2021 Nissen area. I actually recognize a really good move for Neeson I quite like the way this electric vehicle looks. and the specs sound very decent. but it’s all gonna come down to pricey. because it does look fairly premium to me so where’s it gonna sit in the market. we’ll have to wait to find out.
